It’s 2008, the post 9/11 internet era. Millennial Ralph arrives in America seeking to obtain a degree and a shot at the American dream. Contrary to expectations he encounters the travails of a country steeped in recession; the economy anemic and opportunity sparse. Deeply committed to a culture of hard work and lofty achievements, Ralph refuses to surrender to the circumstances of fate. His unmitigated quest for success and achievement takes him down a long, dreary path of back-breaking toil, stupendous innovation, profound self-development and disappointing love affairs. Bearing all this hardship of life by himself metamorphoses the person in him into a resilient personality unmoved by the massive ups and downs of life.

The Immigrant Magician An international student triumph over the Great Recession 2008 edition by Joel Mendonca Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Whaooo! What a book. The details and the experiences shared in the book are worth reading and very insightful from the very first chapter to the last. You can’t stop reading this amazing book from the moment you get the copy. It epitomises the struggles of an international student in a new country where locals may not understand them.
An interesting, inspiring and realistic story of an immigrant's story navigating the first few years in America. A nice read for anyone who wants to get a broader understanding of the challenges faced by international students pursuing the American dream.
Ralph/Joel's experience is one that many people can benefit from. You will learn a lot and have fun doing it. The main character Ralph grows and changes through his experience and by reading this book, international students will be prepared for many of the things that they will be thrown into when they come to America to study. Along the way, they will also learn some great vocabulary from Joel, the author.. I am an ESL teacher and avid reader and I learned several new words. ESL teachers and others who are helping international students can benefit from understanding better some of the cultural crises our students encounter from cultural perceptions of men and women to academic misunderstanding about plagiarism to the amazing amount of work that is necessary to find a job that will support a work visa. This last item could have been a book in itself. A couple of cautions are that the book is long (about 440 pages) which might be tough for a second language learner although the story pulls you in and makes you want to keep turning those pages. In addition, if you are socially conservative and have a high view of relationships between men and women, some of the graphic descriptions of temporary relationships will likely be distasteful and sad. These encounters are not essential to the plot since they don't lead to any lasting changes in Ralph, and they could be skimmed over quickly to get the gist of what happened and continue with the main story. Finally, the book displays a common, non-western culture, cavalier approach to women that may be difficult for some to understand.
This is a great read for an international student. The book is very insightful and the author is very knowledgeable.
Pretty good account. Although I feel it could be a little shorter. The author is detailed in his approach. I would try to avoid so much detail though.
Excellent reading capturing life struggles and challenges typical for international students.. before and after US arrival intriguing stories .. the writer brings great sense of humor. This book dissects the life experience of immigrants students, their hope, and fears as well as success and failures.. at this era of increased diversity and inclusion.. this book couldn't have come at a better time.
This book was a great read. The author is dynamic. An excellent saga of initiative, hope and love. Definitely worth the money.
